(AP) ? China says former U.N. chief Kofi Annan will visit next week to discuss efforts to mediate an end to the crisis in Syria.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei says Annan will visit China on Tuesday and Wednesday. Annan is a joint U.N.-Arab League envoy and will visit China after traveling to Russia.

China and Russia have been chastised because they have twice vetoed U.N. resolutions criticizing Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime for its bloody crackdown on opposition.

Hong said in a statement Saturday that Annan would meet with Chinese leaders, but he did not name them. He said China attaches importance to Annan’s mediation efforts.

The U.N. estimates that more than 8,000 people have been killed since an uprising began in Syria a year ago.

Santorum looks to Louisiana to revive campaign

Underdog Rick Santorum is fighting for a big win in Louisiana as rival Mitt Romney gets closer to locking in the Republican nod to take on President Barack Obama in November.

But even an expected knock-out performance in the southern state of Louisiana on Saturday will not help Santorum make much of a dent in Romney’s commanding lead in all-important delegates.

Romney has now won 21 out of 33 nomination contests, while former Pennsylvania senator Santorum has notched up 10 wins — largely with the help of evangelical Christians and the party’s most conservative members.

Pressure is increasing for Republicans to rally behind Romney and end the bloody and divisive primary battle before it hurts the party’s chances of defeating Obama and winning the White House.

The party found unity in raining criticism upon Obama on the second anniversary of his landmark health care reform Friday.

But that criticism was drowned out of the news cycle after Santorum told supporters “we might as well stay with what we have” if the best the Republican Party can do is nominate someone “who’s just going to be a little different than the person in there.”

Romney immediately pounced on the remark, saying he was “disappointed” Santorum would “rather have Barack Obama as president than a Republican.”

“This election is more important than any one person,” he added.

While Romney focused his campaign appearances on attacking so-called Obamacare as an “unfolding disaster for the American economy,” his surrogates were deployed to pound Santorum.

Senator Santorum is going off the rails,” Ted Kanavas, a former state senator and chair of Romney’s Wisconsin campaign, said in a statement.

Jim Roddey, a party county chair from Santorum’s home state of Pennsylvania, disparaged the candidate’s “arrogant remarks,” calling them “the most inappropriate comments made by any Republican candidate for president in recent history.”

Santorum shot back by insisting it was “preposterous” to say he would support Obama.

“I was simply making the point that there is a huge enthusiasm gap around Mitt Romney,” Santorum said.

“Voters have to be excited enough to actually go vote, and my campaign’s movement to restore freedom is exciting this nation. If this election is about Obama versus the Obama-Lite candidate, we’ll have a tough time rallying this nation.”

Such “outbursts” will only weaken the party in an election where turnout will be crucial, said conservative blogger John Hayward.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for the Number Two candidate to tell his supporters they might as well stay home if the other guy wins the nomination,” he wrote on the Human Events news website.

Santorum had a 14-point lead over Romney in Louisiana in a survey released by Public Policy Polling, thanks in part to conservatives abandoning former House speaker Newt Gingrich.

But the victory could be one of Santorum’s last as the race heads to states where Romney has the advantage.

The former Massachusetts governor was ahead by 13 points in a Rasmussen survey of voters in the midwestern state of Wisconsin, which heads to the polls on April 3 along with Maryland and the US capital Washington.

While Santorum is expected to carry his home state of Pennsylvania in the following contest on April 24, the victory will be overshadowed if Romney is able to sweep New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island, which also vote that day.

Santorum’s campaign said earlier this week that it is looking ahead to May, when the southern states of North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas and Texas vote.

It has also vowed to take the fight all the way to the Republican convention in August if Romney is not able to win the 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

But if enough of the party’s “super delegates” throw their weight behind Romney, the race could be essentially over long before then.

Romney currently has an estimated 560 delegates, while Santorum has won 246, according to the website Real Clear Politics.

Gingrich, who has won two states, has 141 delegates, while Texas Representative Ron Paul, who has not won a single contest, has 66 thanks to the proportional distribution of some delegates.

Since many states award delegates at state conventions, the results of nominating events do not translate easily into an exact delegate count.

Ballroom Dance: A Success for Parks & Recreation

By Mike Pastore | Parks and Recreation Department at March 23, 2012 | 9:45 am | Print

Eight Wednesdays ago, the main room of Whinstone Tavern at Stanley Golf Course was a roof full of nervous strangers. This past Wednesday it was a room filled with the lively laughter of old friends. The catalyst for this change was New Britain Parks and Recreation Department?s new program ?Ballroom Dance & Dine at Whinstone Tavern?.

Every Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. fifteen people, some of them couples, some of them singles, assembled at Whinstone to learn the basics of ballroom.

The instructor, Lisa Evans of Hartford Ballroom, who has been dancing since she was five, taught with an ease and energy that relaxed participants, and freed them of their insecurities and inhibitions on the dance floor. One tactic she employed to foster comradery among the participants, who ranged in age from sixteen to sixty-six, was to have them change partners several times per night.

Class member Hedi Minow-Pike said of the class, ?it was a wonderful experience?. Of Evans she said, ?She is a fantastic instructor who doesn?t overwhelm you with too many new dance steps in one class?.

In addition to instruction on dances like the Fox Trot, Tango, and Cha Cha, each evening the one-hour long class was followed with a mouth-watering assortment of appetizers off Whinstone?s extensive menu. During this time, participants and instructor could unwind and discuss that evening?s lesson. Over the mild winter, dance?s confidence and newly formed friendships bloomed. The final class ended with a special celebratory dinner. All food for the participants was included in the $99 program fee.

?Dance & Dine? is the Parks and Recreation Department?s first offering of Ballroom instruction in over twenty years and was declared a success by all involved.

Participant Lois Schmidt, who baked a cake in honor of the final class, echoed the sentiments her classmates when she said, ?I look forward to more of these classes?.

The Parks and Recreation Department is in fact planning beginner and intermediate versions of ?Dance and Dine? for next the fall and winter at Whinstone Tavern.

Internet Advertising Options By Pradeep Aggarwal

Your online business will likely require more advertising than a contemporary business downtown, yet some new to the world of online business do not spend the time and money to advertise their business appropriately and are, in turn, loosing money. Your online business is crammed into the world wide web along with thousands of others selling the same product or service as yourself. Consider this scenario: In your hometown you want to open an art supply store. In that same town there are thousands of art supply stores. In order for your business to be successful, it will have to stand out in some way from the others. This is exactly what is happening when a business is opened online. There is so much competition, that you must take drastic measures to ensure that you are getting noticed. Advertising can be done in so many ways online. These are some of the most successful ways that you can promote your online business.

Advertising in e-zines is a popular way to promote your online business. Ezines are the magazines of the internet; they written on a particular subject and read by those interested in that subject. Therefore, ezine readers are already potential customers and advertising your site in ezines that are related to your business is almost guaranteed to help drive traffic to your site and increase sales for your product. You should be sure when advertising in ezines that you are not advertising along side competitors. Ask the ezine producer if there is a policy concerning posting competing ads. It is also a good idea to subscribe to the ezine before making a decision about whether or not to advertise in it. An ezine that runs fewer ads is a better choice than one that runs many ads. You can look at the online Directory of Ezines to find publications that are relevant to your company.

Pay-per-click programs are an excellent way to advertise your business without taking a risk that you have advertised in the wrong place. With pay-per-click, you can advertise you site and only pay for those who click the link and go to your site. Another popular pay-per program is the pay-per-lead program that allows you to only pay for leads. Usually this means that you pay for only those who download a trail, fill out a form or enter a sweepstakes; whatever you choose. Lastly you can display pay-per-click banner ads in which your company would be allowed to place a banner on their site and you will be charged for every click that your banner receives.

Opt-In email is a great way to advertise your business, however it is expensive and it can be misused very easily. Using opt-in emails, you would submit your sales copy to the company that will in turn email it to those on their mailing list. You should be very careful since some of the companies that advertise their mailing lists as opt-in email service is sometimes really SPAM. It is essential that you have a perfect and effective sales letter when using opt-in mailing lists. Without and effective sales copy your money and time have been wasted. Ed Powell replied to Shannon Donelson’s discussion ‘Is the Cloud Creating Jobs in Your Organization?’ in the group Microsoft Productivity for Government

I just read this great post from the Microsoft BrightSide staff and wanted to share. During these challenging economic times, government agencies have adopted the motto of “doing more with less.” There’s been a lot of discussion recently about solutions that can cut costs and drive efficiency in agencies, but now we are seeing something even better come from these solutions: JOBS.?

Employment is a big issue right now for many Americans. The great news is that as government agencies find ways to save, they are also finding ways to grow. A recent?Microsoft-sponsored IDC research study found that nearly 1.6 million new public sector jobs?will be created globally as a result of cloud computing by the end of 2015.?

According to Microsoft, the study found that a little money spent up front investing in?cloud solutions can lead to substantial returns down the line. As organizations invest more in innovative IT services, they generate savings that can be invested in the hiring of sales, finance, production and even marketing teams.

One awesome finding that I noticed was that the cloud could create?$1.1 trillion in revenue a year by 2015. In fact, according to Microsoft, cloud computing can be save organizations more than outsourcing, while also creating jobs. ?

?

What about you?

Case Study: Securing Web Applications | SecurityWeek.Com

With estimated worldwide cyber crime losses in 2011 over $388 billion, corporations, both large and small, are focusing considerable attention towards the security of their physical infrastructures as well as their outward facing web applications. While most physical infrastructures have been secured, there are still many critical security vulnerabilities in the majority of web applications. In this ?Case Study? column I will share some takeaways based on my involvement in two recent remediation engagements as a basis for understanding the reasons behind the continued trend in vulnerable web applications. I will also touch briefly on the testing of web applications for security vulnerabilities and remediation and development techniques employed to ensure security.

How to Secure Web ApplicationsWhat is a Web Application?

Web applications may be defined as computer programs that are accessed over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. Web applications (commonly called websites) are the human interfaces to on-line activities (i.e. on-line retail sales, webmail, social networks) accessed through web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome.

Web applications, by their very nature and implementation, present unique and difficult security issues. Web applications are traditionally built to provide value to ?well behaved? users. Given this expectation, web application developers focus their efforts on responding to ?good behavior? as well as weeding out unintentional ?errant behavior? (i.e. bad zip codes, empty fields). It is the ?deliberately malicious behavior?, and the lack of development attention to the consequences of this behavior, that presents security issues.

As an example, consider an on-line retail sales web application where a user, via browser interactions, exchanges data with a web application that is hosted within the corporation?s data center. The connection between the user and the data-center hosted web application has, by necessity, bypassed all physical security. To compound potential security problems, the web application servicing the user will often have direct access to the database containing retail transaction information for all users of that on-line sales application. The only safeguard between the user and the transition database is the web application.

Web application security issues arise when the web application reacts poorly to unexpected information requests or specially crafted data from a user with a malicious intent. A ?confused? web application may become a security risk when that confusion allows unintended manipulation of the web application functionality itself.

A classic example of such a malicious ploy is the substitution of database commands when benign data is expected (SQL Injection) ? the login password field is often a target since its corresponding value is stored in the application?s database. If input data is not filtered by the web application, the user effectively has the power to run their own ?mini? application via database commands, perhaps with full access to the entire database, if not the entire internal network.

The Web Applications Under Study

While I?m only citing two web applications in this study, I feel that they are representative of the massive number of web applications that are currently at risk today. If asked to label the stratum where these web applications fit, I might pick ?Middle America? or ?Professional Class?. Both web applications were centric to companies with the following characteristics:

? Revenues between $5 and $10 million

? Critical dependencies on the web application in order to do business

? Processing and storing data would be considered ?protected? by federal and state agencies

? Tremendous financial risk (i.e. fines, flight of clients) if stored data is compromised Both web applications were followed from initial security vulnerability discovery through security remediation and redeployment.

Common Security Risks

Recent studies indicate over 70% of all web applications contain critical security flaws. Given the financial and time costs, loss of reputation and potential flight of customers that any compromised company may incur, this is an amazingly high number.

An evaluation of the web applications under study as well as conversations with the owners and developers of the web application provided the following insight as to the risk factors associated with web applications:

? Web application age ? The breakneck arms race between security professionals and cyber criminals often leaves a once secure web application open to new-found attacks. One of the studied web applications was over five years old; built at a time when web application security was not a mainstream concern.

? A lack of a security focus ? Not only are most business owners not aware of potential security problems, but many are being misled by their IT staff who believe good development practices are sufficient to produce secure web applications. Both business owners had little technical expertise and no awareness of the business and financial risks their web applications posed. The newest web application in the study was built in the last six months by a reputable software development company that incorrectly told the company?s owner the web application was secure.

? No security testing expertise or tools ? Web applications are under tremendous pressure from security attack methods that can only be simulated by professional security testers using sophisticated manual techniques and automated vulnerability scanning tools. It came as no surprise that neither web application was testing for security vulnerabilities and very few, if any, development organizations provide the tools or expertise required to perform these tests.

In hindsight, both web applications were destined to be security nightmares ? each contained at least two unanswered risk factors.

The largest problem was the naivety of the business owners. At no point did the owners know enough to be insistent on proof that the web application, at the heart of the business, was secure from attacks by malicious hackers. This common mistake may be the single largest reason our industry continues to see 70% of all web applications containing critical security flaws.

Testing The Security

It has been my experience that the majority of web applications now on the Internet have never been tested for security vulnerabilities. This observation is confirmed by the surprisingly large percentage (70%) of web applications that have been found to contain critical vulnerabilities.

By definition, all web application vulnerabilities originate in the web application software itself, including supporting software components and configuration of supporting components (i.e., database encryption). A complete web application security test must address this full range.

Security testing methodologies fall into three general areas:

? Automated vulnerability scanning ? Automated security scanning tools are designed to simulate security attacks on targeted web applications. These scanners run a simulation of every known WEB application attack (updated frequently to keep pace with recently discovered security attack methods) over the entirety of the web application.

? Manual testing ? Professional cyber criminals will often spend hours or days probing a web application for security flaws. A white hat equivalent (good guy) will use the same skills and persistence to identify the same flaws, except with the goal of remediating the flaws, not compromising the data.

? Code reviews ? While the majority of security testing can be done from the browser-side (automated scanning and manual reviews), a security code review will discover security issues that manifest themselves only after a web application has been compromised. For example, a security code review might indentify inadequate database encryption or back doors set up by malicious developers (timing the set up of back-doors allows a developer to compromise the IT system when the web application is in production).

The study of the two web applications began at the point where both web applications were already deployed and centric to their respective businesses. Several hours of manual security testing revealed the fact that both web applications were susceptible to SQL Injection attacks (direct database access). This information alerted both companies for the need to immediately address previously unknown security problems.

Each web application was then copied to a security test staging environment where a full-automated vulnerability security scan was performed. These scans each revealed badly flawed web applications that were even more at risk than previously thought.

It is virtually impossible to create a secure web application (no critical security flaws) without including security testing as part of the software development lifecycle (SDLC). As we will see in the following section, while adherence to well-established software development practices is essential to the creation of an operational and security sound web application, reaching that goal is hard, if not impossible without corresponding functional and security testing.

Securing The Application

An analogy can be made between the intertwined disciplines of software development and SQA and their security counterparts. Industry accepted SDLC standards have advocated a need for a strong correlation between software development and SQA ? with a requirement to consider both disciplines in lockstep throughout the entire life cycle of any development project.

Like the development of an operationally sound web application, the processes behind the creation of a secure web application must include software development processes that include structured security methodologies and the inclusion of security testing.

Security-oriented development practices are not only compatible with the creation of high-quality software application development, but when done correctly, the integration of the two is seamless. With training and awareness, software development professionals can incorporate security sensitive coding techniques as part of their normal practices.

To add to this, it has been my observation that the addition of security-aware development does not significantly add time or cost to an already well structured, professionally done development effort.

Web Application #1

The older of the two web application?s in the study, through manual and automated testing, was found to be vulnerable to critical security attacks by even inexperienced hackers. Because of the company-centric nature of this web application, a decision was made to secure the existing web application as quickly as possible.

The initial remediation stage of this first web application went as follows:

Secure Software Development? Triage known critical security flaws ? While security tests pointed out numerous critical security flaws, the immediate need was to identify those flaws that might be considered high-risk. These flaws were selected because of the relative ease of a successful security attack and the ?protected? status of the data that would be compromised.

? Repair of high-risk security flaws ? Each security flaw identified in the triage stage above was remediated to thwart any security attack against that flaw.

? Conduct code reviews ? At least two software developers (skilled in standard and security development techniques) reviewed the remediated software to assure the quality of the repair and verify no additional security flaws had been introduced.

? Retest web application ? Automated web application security scans were rerun and compared to pre-remediation scans. This retest verified the repair of the high-risk flaws as well as the fact that no addition vulnerabilities had been introduced.

At the conclusion of the initial remediation stage, the web application was considered safe from amateur hackers, with added protection against direct access to the application database. This was a far cry better than its previous status.

In subsequent stages, the remainder of the critical security flaws were fixed using the same repair, code review and retest cycles as noted above.

Web Application #2

The second web application under study had only recently been deployed and was, therefore, less company-critical than the first. Unfortunately, the second web application was developed by a team that not only lacked security development skills, but also lacked skills that would produce operationally sound web applications.

Given the fact that a significant portion of the web application collected and stored easily compromised medical information, a quick decision was made to immediately take down the new site and replace it with a ?placeholder? site that, while very limited in functionality, was not subject to security attacks that would yield ?protected? information.

The development of the second web application followed standard SDLC methodologies with the addition of vulnerability security scans at every major release point. These scans not only ensured the security of the application but also raised the security awareness and skill levels of the development team. While not a substitute for security development training, periodic reminders of code-based security flaws educated developers in the art of correct security oriented development.

Conclusion While the sample size in this study was far too small to draw any statistically valid conclusions, it did reinforce studies indicating a 70% security failure rate of all web applications.

Also of interest was the fact that the owners of two very successful companies were oblivious of the serious security risks their web applications represented. While there do not seem to be any studies of the percentage of companies that are security ?clueless?, this anecdotal evidence indicates this percent might be very high.

Finally, it is sobering to think of the huge number of companies that are dependent on otherwise very competent development teams, who with security training and testing, could be producing secure web applications as opposed to the very vulnerable products that exist today.

China to phase out prisoner organ donation

(AP) ? State media are quoting a top health official as saying China will phase out the practice of taking organs from executed prisoners.

The official Xinhua News Agency quoted Vice Health Minister Huang Jiefu as saying Thursday that organ donations from condemned prisoners will be abolished within five years. It said hospitals will rely instead on a national organ donation system that is being set up.

China has a huge population in need of transplants but few donors. Most donations come from condemned prisoners. The government says prisoners volunteer to donate organs but rights groups say there are concerns that inmates are pressured to comply before execution.

China performs more executions annually than any other country.

Chinese ?gangster?s? alleged cell phone pictures going viral

Imgur

A lengthy series of pictures was uploaded to the anonymous photo-sharing site Imgur, which purports to show a young Chinese “gangster” at work and play.

There’s an ongoing debate as to whether these pictures are real or staged. It’s possible the money could have been digitally inserted into the pictures and the violent scenes could be staged. But the pictures of the man standing next to and inside a pair of Porsches appear to be real. And then there’s the question of who exactly uploaded the picture to the anonymous photo-sharing site. Were they uploaded by the alleged Chinese “gangster” himself or by someone who got a hold of his phone and decided to share the images with the world?

The most widely distributed of these images show the man next to a large stack of 100-Yuan bills. According to ABC News, the man is sitting next to an estimated $170,000 worth of Yuan, which is about 20 times the annual income of the average Chinese citizen.

Imgur

There’s even one picture of the man holding a cute puppy.

But as your scroll through the photos, they take a dark turn, and include several violent images that appear to show a man being beaten, gagged and possibly having his fingernail or an entire finger removed.

Business Insider reports that the estimated value of China’s black market is $261 billion. That’s larger than the entire gross national income of several nations, according to information provided by the Nations Online Project.
